Ron Thomas With His Team's Tremendous 17.20 Catch
More Tournament Weigh-In Scenes
Finishing Off The 2006 Regular Spring Season
Expectations were high as 29 teams from the Duluth Bass Club made way along the Antebellum trail to Lake Oconee for the Spring’s final tournament. Oconee can be difficult and present a real challenge with its discharges and pump back systems, making it like fishing tidal waters, and several of the top teams barely registered at the weigh-in and thus creating massive confusion for the spring season points championship.
Once again, we must thank Terminator Fishing Lures for their sponsorship and support of the Duluth Bass Club, they have been very proactive in our club events and truly provided a great package of products to club members and the custom jackets for the season point champions are awesome. We termed the program – “Terminator Hall Fame or Shame” Sad to report once again it is a “Hall of Shame.” Our TD Roger & partner Rick shared a weak excuse for not having a Terminator lure tied on so they both lose out and they will not reap the benefits of a $100 Terminator gift certificate. The spring season had three winners and hopefully, after enough razzing the club will eventually catch on. Members, please advise if we didn’t explain the program well enough, Gene will be more than happy to go over it again for you -- LOL.
Tournament honors went to the team of Ron Thomas and Jim Blanchette with a great 5 bass limit weighing 17.20 lbs. Jim also caught the Big Bass of the tournament, a 5.99 lb’er which fell for a DB-22 CB along the rip-rap near the tourney headquarters. Ron noted they caught many keepers during the day and all were caught in 2-8 ft depths on one of three baits – Crankbait, GRN jigs, T-Rig Caustic worms.
Second place went to Mike Haddad – Joe Yurina with an excellent 5 bass catch weighing 11.63 lb. Mike – Joe’s performance was the result of throwing prop-baits, chug-bug’s early in the 1-4 ft depths, then picking up the jig and working deeper cover and docks the remainder of the day. This catch propelled Mike – Joe to the point championship for the spring season. In addition to established club recognition for the point champions; they will also receive custom made jackets for their spring season efforts thanks to Terminator Fishing Lures.
Third Place went to David McAdams fishing solo with a limit of 5 weighing 11.07. Mac noted all his fish fell for a GP Trick worm fished tight under/around docks in the 10’ depths.
Fourth Place went to Kam – Tim Lim with their limit of 5 weighing 10.50. Tim noted all their fish fell for a GP T-Rig worm fished around cover and brush in the 16’ depths.
Fifth Place went to David Nicholson – Jim Skinner with their limit of 5 weighing 9.43. David noted their fish were caught on several baits; Traps, Spider grubs in the 1-6’ depths.
CONGRATULATIONS Ron - Jim! You mastered waters of Oconee and some tough fishing conditions
Weather Conditions: Sunday began with 70 deg morning air temps and air temps climbed to near 92 by weigh-in. The wind was a small factor mid-day. Water surface temperatures ranged from 81 on the main lake and 85 degree water could be found in the backs of pockets.
July, the Duluth Bass Club starts the fall fishing season on Lake Logan Martin on Sunday -16; the first tournament of Fall Season. The monthly meeting will be at Bass Pro Shops in Duluth on Tuesday, July 11th - 7:00 PM at the Bass Pro Shops. We will have a few membership openings; if interested promptly contact us via the DBC website.
Sponsors: In addition to Terminator Fishing Lures; Special thanks also to club sponsor: “Tom’s Foods” who overwhelms us with enough snacks and goodies to keep a few of the 80+ anglers out of the local breakfast establishments and allows them concentrate on the important things.
