Lake Lanier
Carl Gessner And Tony Combs With Tourney Big Bass
Putting the wraps on DBC’s Fall Season; 24 teams including 3 guest teams showed for what turned out to be a wonderful day on beautiful Lake Sidney. And it was undoubtedly a great day for a large handful of teams who found cooperating fish. It appeared there was a pattern working to nearly everyone’s liking.
However, it was Gene Hacker and partner James Eason that impressed the crowd with their December bite. Working in harmony, Gene - James combined spinnerbaits shallow, and the green pumpkin T-Rig while combing the 45 ft depths and culling through over 2 limits to produce a real nice bag of spots weighing 15.14 and win a tight contest. Gene had command of the spinnerbait early with the moderate breeze and produced the tournament’s #2 big bass, weighing 3.91 lbs. Grinning ear to ear, Gene noted that Lanier somehow always bites them this time of the year and this one was a long time coming and a good win. Their catch moved them to 3rd pl in the final season points race.
Congratulations, James and Gene on an excellent Lanier win! Great Catch Guys…
Capturing second, Joe Yurina – Mike Haddad culled through many 2.5 lb spots to produce a limit pressing the scales to 15.03 and falling less than 2 oz behind Gene – James. Mike - Joe relied on the late fall pattern of finding bait in the creek channels and spooning them up. Joe has gained a lot of confidence in the 3/4oz. spoon and Mike runs the back-up bait; a small 3/16 oz jig with the Yamamoto 4” GP twin tails. Mike - Joe noted, their 4 limits of keepers they culled through during the day all came out of 30-40’ of water, we would track baitfish & brush-piles on the electronics and most channels appeared to have good fish cruising in them. Their showing is consistent with all the recent T-Giving weekend results…..solid 14-16 lb performances.
Third place went to Matt – Dick Perron, who showed a strong performance with their respectable 12.31 mixed sack of spots/LM. Matt – Dick worked one small creek on the lower end, casting Bomber 200 CB’s on the bank for a few keepers and then used a back-up plan of working a jig-head finesse worm in the 6-40 range over all types of shallow to deep cover.
The forth position went to the team of Jerry Adams and Steve Nalder; this duo produced a limit weighing 12.12. These guys worked GP creepy crawlers in 45 ft brush-piles, standing timber, and stump fields all day long. Their sack maintained a hold on the fall season points race and Jerry – Steve claimed the Fall Season Points Championship. Congratulations guys!
Jay Donohue fishing solo finished 5th with 5 pressing club scales 11.86. Jay’s pattern was working a G/P Hula grub in a 40 ft ledge. Jay has been evaluating partners during this season and noted he has secured a spring season partner and will be a force to be reckoned with going forward.
Winning Patterns: As noted, the SB early in the wind appeared to be the predominate morning pattern. No surprise --- deep water slowly worked worms and creepy crawlers after locating the bait and you have located the fish. There are good fish yet to be caught shallow in the backs of deepwater pockets. Look for the wind blown pockets and again locate the bait. This pattern will hold, as the weather remains steady. Lanier is at its best this time of year, so get out and go play with the magnums for the next several weeks.
Weather Conditions: Perfect fishing conditions, easterly winds blew early and died around noon, with lots of sun and no clouds. The low in the morning was 42 degrees and pleasant 58 later in the afternoon. The water temps are holding 57 to 58 degrees north and south. Creeks and rivers are clear with the lake is near 8.2 ft below pool.
