More Tournament Weigh-In Scenes

The Duluth Bass Club held its fall two-day tourney on Lake Guntersville this past weekend. October has become the fall 2-day get-away event for the club.  25 teams made the long drive to this very popular 90,000-acre impoundment with thoughts of plentiful, big bass that would be for the most part easy to find in the Big G’s vast variety of cover.  But as it turns out only three teams captured a limit of bass over two days meeting the 15” minimum. On Saturday a total of 38 Bass were caught weighing 97.25 lb including two of the limits.  The average weight was 2.559. On Sunday - 23 Bass were caught weighing 58.33 lb including one limit, Average weight was 2.536.  Most everyone reported a tough bite in general, but as always someone figures out a pattern.

Weather played a huge factor during the entire weekend; as fronts moved thru Friday eve, leaving cold conditions Saturday morning and breezy conditions on Sunday.  After day one, you would have thought you would see the same names at the top of the leader board but that was not the case.  On day two, some held their own, others faltered, and others came from behind.

Terminator Sponsorship:  Tim Lim & Tommy Piner had the Terminator goods tied on when sneaky Gene inspected their boat on Sat.  Gene presented them with the $100 Gift Certificate to purchase their choice of Terminator fishing products.

Weekend side-pots
BBass - Sat, Day 1: Michael Thomas, 6.05 lb. Caught on a chugbug
BBass - Sun, Day 2: Jerry Adams, 5.84 lb. Caught on a 11" Red Bug worm on the ledges
Big Stringer Day-1: MT & Albert Little, 15.01 lb.
Big Stringer Day-2: Randy Little & Robert Turner, 12.67 lb.

Tourney Big Bass....
BBass#1 - Sat: MT, 6.05 lb.
BBass#2 - Sun: Jerry A, 5.84 lb.
BBass#3 - Sat: Rick Morris, 3.67 lb.

23 member teams fished and 2 guests joined us for the weekend.

Tournament honors went to Jerry Adams and (Alt.) Richard Harris with a two-day total of 21.89 lbs.  Jerry and Richard had caught most of their fish on ledges with a Carolina rigged V&M 10” Red Bug worm;  on Sunday Jerry  captured the days BB honors with a 5.84 pounder on the same C-rig in the 12-15 ft depths. These guys made a huge move and are not atop the club standings with 2 T’s remaining.

Second place falling from the Saturday leader board, was Michael Thomas – Albert Little with a two day total of 20.01. Their pattern was chug bugs and Ribbit frogs for a 15.01 stringer on Sat including the Tournament’s BB weighing 6.05 lbs which fell for Michael’s early morning chug-bug. Their Sunday catch consisted of a 2 bass sack caught on watermelon seed worms in the 5-8’ depths. Their finish moved them to 3rd PL in the fall standings.

Third place went to Roger Landress - Rick Morris with 14.4.  Roger - Rick held 2nd Pl after day one and fell down a notch on day-two. Rich caught the 3rd BB of the tournament on a jig Sat which weighed 3.67. They caught their fish on a jig and a Gambler frog closely resembling the Ribbit frog. Rog noted Sat’s fish came from a short stretch of shoreline with the quality grass mats needed for the frog success. Sunday was a different story.

Forth place was Matt Thomas - Ron Thomas with a 12.85 2-day total. Matt - Ron held 3rd place after day-1 with a strong 10+ sack and their disappointing day-2 only dropped them to 4th place. Rattle traps, ribbon tailed worms, accounted for most of their entire catch over both days.

Fifth place; the team of Randy Little - Robert Turner with a 2-day total of 12.67  Randy and Robert came from behind won the big stringer pot on Sunday. After a wash-out on Sat; Robert – Randy caught all their Sunday fish on jigs in the 8-12 ft depths. Great comeback guys.  Randy – Robert are now solid in 2nd PL in the club standings.

Saturday’s Big Bass was caught by Michael Thomas on a Chug Bug and weighed 6.05 lb.

Congratulations to Jerry Adams and Richard Harris for a solid 2-day tournament catch on Lake Guntersville, a well-deserved win!

It was a tough tournament but still loads of fun for our club, thanks to everyone for helping things run smoothly.

Special thanks to everyone in Guntersville, and the surrounding communities; we met super excellent hospitable folks, and enjoyed great southern cooking.  We really want to thank the local communities for recognizing the bass anglers and their impact to the economy by providing special treatment.  We can’t wait and we will be back. Thank you all who frequent the area around and on the Big G.

Weather Conditions:  The weather was nice most of the weekend. Lows Sunday was in the low 40’s with highs in the mid 70’s.  Most of the lake was lightly stained to clear on the south end with temps ranging to 67-72 degrees.

Fishing Tactics:   worms in many flavors, chug bugs and frogs all produced fairly well during the 2-days.  Fishing the river ledges was key for many top teams. Crankbaits, jerk-baits, c-rigged worms along the rip-rap, rock, and bridges accounted for some of the keepers.

Looking Ahead: Next month DBC heads to Sinclair on Sunday November 19th.  The Approved ramp is Little River. Note the meeting is on Tuesday Nov 14th @ Bass Pro Shops in Discover Mills Mall – 7-PM.
