Brian Robinson And Tournament Big Bass
More Tournament Weigh-In Scenes
The Duluth Bass Club held its spring two-day tourney on Lake Guntersville this past weekend. It has become the 2-day spring get-away event for the club to this very popular 90,000-acre impoundment, and again 37 teams found the drive worth it. The bass are big, plentiful, and for the most part easy to find in the Big G’s vast variety of cover. Very few teams had difficulties capturing bass meeting the 15” minimum limit and everyone reported catching quantities of fish.
Weather was a major factor during the entire weekend; Tornado moving thru Friday eve, super cold front conditions Saturday night after the front blew through. After day one, you would have thought you would see the same names at the top of the leader board but that was not the case. On day two, some held their own, others faltered, and others came from behind.
Rising from 10th place after day one; tournament honors went to Brian – Julie Robinson with and impressive two-day total of 32.48 lbs. Brian - Julie had solid limits each day; caught mostly on Char/White spinnerbaits; however Sunday Brian coerced a 8.86 lb’er to take a 8” GP lizard in 2’ of water thus capturing tourney BB honors and amassed a 21.14 lb stringer to overcome the field. Brian's big bass now stands as club big record and may hold for some time.
Second place and holding their slot from the Saturday leader board, was Jerry Adams – Steve Nalder with two impressive limits that totaled 27.87. Jerry – Steve’s pattern was slowly working GP finesse worms, spinnerbaits, Fish-Head Spins through the grassy humps near T-headquarters, weigh-in site.
Third place went to Gary – Matt Henry with 27.62. Gary – Matt held 7th pl after day one and kicked it up a notch on day-two. The caught their fish on Traps, T-Rig GP lizards in 5-6 ft depths.
Forth place was Mike Haddad – Joe Yurina with a 27.05 2-day total. Mike - Joe held 2nd place after day-1 with a strong 17+ sack and their disappointing day-2 dropped them to 4th place. Ribbon tails worms, Blueberry lizards accounted for their entire catch over both days.
Fifth place; the consistent team of Beau Keller - Watt Keller with a 2-day total of 26.40. Relagated to fishing out of his 14ft-jon boat due to his boat being in the shop, had an impressive catch under the conditions endured. Beuan & Watt caught their fish on spinnerbait, Traps, and GP Mag worms.
Sixth place, was Michael Thomas – Robert Turner, they came from 13th place on Saturday, to finish with 22.80.
Seventh place went to Gene Hacker – James Eason with 21.20.
Saturday’s Big Bass was caught by Joe Yurina on a Blueberry lizard in 5 ft’ grassy water up river and weighed 6.46 lb.
Congratulations to Brian - Julie for a solid 2-day tournament catch on Lake Guntersville, a well-deserved win!
It was a great tournament and loads of funs for our club, thanks to everyone for helping things run smoothly.
Special thanks to everyone in Guntersville, and the surrounding communities; we met super excellent hospitable folks, and enjoyed great southern cooking. We really want to thank the local communities for recognizing the bass anglers and their impact to the economy by providing special motel treatment during a hectic race weekend. We can’t wait and we will be back. Thank you all who frequent the area around and on the Big G.
Weather Conditions: The weather was superb most of the weekend, with the exception of the strong winds Sat PM as the front moved in, which remained through morning Sunday. Lows Sunday was in the mid 30’s with highs in the low 60’s. Most of the lake was lightly stained to clear on the south end with temps ranging 62 to 65 degrees.
Fishing Tactics: Lizards, worms in many flavors, crankbaits all produced well during the 2-days. Fishing the grass, submerged humps, river ledges was key for many top teams, and crankbaits, jerk-baits, worms along the rip-rap, rock, bridges near Civitan park and tourney headquarters accounted for many late day keepers.
Looking Ahead: Next month DBC heads to Russell on Sunday May 21. The Approved ramp is Elbert. Note the meeting is on Tuesday May 16 @ Bass Pro Shops in Discover Mills Mall – 7-PM.
