The Story
DBC elected to test angling skills on the clear spring like waters of Lake Russell, for the 5th tourney of the spring where a tight race for the Season’s Point Championship now hangs in the balance. With one tournament remaining; it will be interesting to see if a couple formidable teams can mount a comeback or be relegated to sub par finishes.
Taking top honors for the tournament, Bill – dad, Bill Sr. Booth won with a real nice sack of fish benching the scales to 13.06. Bill has been on the red hot fish-head spin pattern at Lanier for so long; he opted to employ it at Russell also – and was very successful. Bill worked the deep bridge pilings with a fish-head in 5-10’ range over the 40-ft piling depths. Bill also brought in the 2nd BB of the day, a 4.40 lb’er caught on a drop-shot while working the same bridge pilings. Bill noted they culled thru a couple limits.
Second Place - After a great Saturday pre-fishing; Dick – Michael Childs had tremendous confidence in their pattern. SB & top-water early….and it paid off very well. Not only did they take 2nd place with a 12.83 sack; Dick grabbed BB honors with a 6.47 LM caught early on a 3/8 oz white SB working the 10’ft depths. Michael noted they filled the remainder of their sack with top-water bites and eventually a couple late day keepers on plastics.
It was Gene Hacker’s absence which allowed James Eason to team up with alternate Bobby Anderson and finish third with 10.29 and has nearly propelled them into the classic race. Appears Bobby Lee brought a new dimension beyond the Gene Hacker SB attack. Bobby Lee employed tactics like the spook, chug-bug, fluke, and yes, a SB. With a limit before 7:30, they changed fishing locations and lures all day long to improve their sack by culling at least 2 limits.
Grabbing fourth place was Howard Bentley – Kelton Peels with a decent five fish limit of 9.74. Howard noted catching all their fish all day long on jerk-baits in 4-ft depths and culled several during the day.
Fifth place honors were taken by Mike Haddad – Joe Yurina with their five fish limit of 9.40. Their sack was anchored entirely by Mike since Joe failed to have a fish in the well at weigh-in. Mike’s early morning chug-bug bite rarely fails and today was no exception. In addition a late day worm bite in the 7-10 ft depths helps make a couple late day culls.
Rounding out the tournament stats, the club had 29 teams and 2 guest teams participate. A total 111 bass consisting of a near even number of Largemouth, Spots, presented at the scales for a total creel of 174 pounds to render an average weight of 1.56 pounds per fish.
Winning Patterns: With water temps in low 70’s, Majorities of the fish are heading to their summer homes and were found near deep water. Better catches came from main lake stuff. The first several hours were critical as the fish came up to feed. Top water baits and reaction bait like flukes and spinners produce well. Bedding fish were the point of interest for a few teams, however success was non-existent.
Weather Condition: Tremendous Thunder/Lightning storm moved thru between mid-night to 2-AM which may have had a negative impact. Russell was mainly clear with the exception of the backs of the main creeks. Winds light and variable, the morning low was a comfortable 64 degrees and the high reached 84. Rain and thunder threatened in afternoon but was never a factor as the day was mostly sunny & windy.
Looking ahead: June 18th DBC completes the regular Spring Season. The final tournament stop is on Lake Oconee. Teams interested in joining for the Fall Season are encouraged to fish as a guest at Oconee to see what we are about.
