Tourney Winners, Spence Price and David Morton with their 9.37 catch.
This past weekend’s trip to Lake Russell for the Duluth Bass Club became more than a fishing tournament in the dog days of summer, more like major R&R as many club anglers settled in at the Lazy L Hunting and Fishing Lodge for a great relaxing evening steak cookout, socializing and tossing some horseshoes and garnering club camaraderie.
Typical weather greeted the club. Dog days were upon us, however someone always figures them out. The tournament saw eight limits brought to the scales. With a mix of largemouth, spotted, and a couple Coosa bass, the club as a whole weighed 66 fish. The avg. weight per fish was 1.4135 pounds each for a tournament total of 93.29 pounds.
Once again, we must thank Terminator Fishing Lures for their sponsorship and support of the Duluth Bass Club; they have been very active in our club events and truly provide a great package of products to club members. We termed the program – "Terminator Hall of Fame or Shame" This month we are able to report it is the "Hall of Fame." Bill Booth – dad, Bill Sr. had Terminator spinnerbaits tied on and Gene presented them with a $100 Terminator gift certificate. GREAT!
Overcoming the obstacles and the conditions; Spence Price - David Morton laid claim to tournament honors with 5 fish that pressed the scales to 9.37. Spence noted their fish fell victim to Spot-sticker’s and a Drop-shot. Spence also had 2nd BB of the day with a 3.15 lb LIP. These guys recently joined the club and are off to a great start. Excellent Job guys.
Second Place: Wayne Craft – J Kettles brought 5 keepers to the scales weighing 8.90. Wayne noted; "we had an early morning rattletrap bite and a late day fish-Head Spin jigging bite to garner the catch". "Making our normal milk-run produced several keeper fish during the course of the day" said Wayne, "Guess we just needed a couple bigger ones". Wayne did catch the 3rd BB of the day, a 2.95-lb’er caught jigging a Fish-Head Spin in the 18’ depths.
Third Place: Eric – Darren Holmes garnered 3rd place finish with 3 bass weighing 8.65. Eric noted their fish came off drop-shots in the 12-13 ft depths covering a lot of water. In addition Darren caught the Big Bass of the tourney; a 3.62 LIP on the drop-shot in the same 12-13’ depths. This father-son team is back together again and off to a great start this fall after taking a short break from club fishing. Way to go guys.
Fourth Place: Randy Little – Robert Turner finished in 4th place their 5 bass sack weighing 7.73. Randy also noted they caught over 10 keeper throughout the day on Drop-shots in 15-40 ft depths using a little 4" weenie worm. These guys are now atop the heap in the fall season points race… Nice catch, hang in there….everyone’s out to get you now.
Fifth Place: Buddy Siddall - Yvonne Gustafson eked out a 5 bass limit weighing 7.72 caught throughout the entire day on finesse worms/spot-stickers jigs in the 10-12 ft depths. Yvonne stated "All the pre-fishing, our normal stuff just wasn’t working – we changed up completely and went to the finesse baits and it paid off". BTW….Yvonne kept a very low profile, however it did come out that she put 4 of the 5 keepers in the boat and did state that "Buddy was a good net-man" Great!
Fish Patterns – Friday and Saturday pre-fishing reports were deemed poor at best. Reports echoed of small fish and very few being caught after tossing everything in the tackle box. Drop-shot and Fish-Head spins were the bait of choice for numbers but generally smaller fish.
Weather Conditions: 90+ degree daytime, little to no wind. The lake was mostly clear, with the exception the back of major creeks being lightly stained.
Sponsors: Again, many thanks to Terminator Fishing Lures and also Tom’s Foods for supplying all the morning snacks and goodies for everyone fishing. Great way to start and end the day.
Next Month: The DBC trail heads to Lake Oconee in September. Ought to be interesting – stay tuned…
