Lake Keowee

Tournament Champs Tim And Kam Lim
Change of Scenery
Desiring a change of scenery, the majority of the Duluth Bass Club opted for Lake Keowee, SC, which is well known in the region as superior wintertime lake and many tournament trails make it one of their regular stops. But this was to be a first for DBC and a first for many of the members. This clear mountain lake offered a wide range of fishing styles and proved itself a challenge that certainly lived up to its reputation. Keowee is a different lake than most members are accustomed to, for it is deep and mostly void of any nature structure, as the forest lands that once habited its waters were completely harvested before its impoundment in 1971. One club member reported it is like fishing in a swimming pool as he stated how clean the bottom appears on his electronics. For this reason, fish on Keowee tend to key in on and concentrate in certain areas of the lake around man-made structure; and to complicate matters, often the quality fish are taken from depths of 80 to 100 feet. Knowing this, many of DBC’s members really had to amend their fishing styles. Despite the challenges, after it was all said and done, the consensus was the club will return someday.
On Keowee 30 teams showed for what would be a cold cloudy day that produced few small snow flurries. From the 30 teams, 95 bass were harvested (mostly spots) that product a total creel of 160.23 pounds for an average of 1.63 pounds per fish. Eleven limits were weighed and all but four teams produced fish at the scales.
The tournament’s honors went to two guys that are new to club this season and are now capturing the club’s attention with their strong showing last month on Lanier and Sunday’s victory on Keowee. Their combined efforts have them at the top of the leader board and in control of the Spring Championship Points lead, and they are brothers “Kam - Tim Lim”. The brothers trampled the field with their limit of 13.22. And it was Tim that secured their victory with tournament’s big bass, a whopper of a large-lip pounding the scales down to 6.05. Good for them, they must have forgot to read the textbook on Keowee for it was their shallow water pattern which produced their winning combinations. Not only did Tim catch the BB in less than 10’ on a T-Rig June Bug worm; these guys caught their entire sack on the June Bug and GP finesse worms rigged Texas style and fished from 15-22 ft depths.
Congratulations Kam & Tim on excellent tournament win.
Milling out second, Jim Blanchette - Ron Thomas produced a limit to weigh 10.74. Jim and Ron fell in love with Keowee in the two days they spent on the water. During their pre-fishing efforts Saturday they found a ledge bite that just wouldn’t quit and continued for them on through to final hours of the tournament. According to Jim and Ron; they had luxury of culling many times over on a single stretch of bank near a river channel while fishing green pumpkin finesse worms in a 20-22 ft depth range.
Third place went to Royce Ingle and his alternate partner David McFry with 9.55. Nether Royce or David had seen the lake until Sunday morning but with help of David Mac were able to produce a respectable limit with by working Royce’s favorite Lanier bait; a GP finesse worm in the 15-25 ft depths. David noted they had a limit by 8:30 AM and culled through nearly 3 limits during the day.
Forth place went to Beau - Watt Keller with their limit 9.05. These guys are another new team making a most respectable splash in the club this spring. They had a 2 prong depth approach. Early morning was a GP T-Rig bite in the 42-50 ft depths and the afternoon bite was a 22 ft bite. Beau noted they culled a few on both patterns.
Fifth place went to Eric Holmes and Rick Cotten with 4 fish weighing in at 8.68. One of their fish came early in less then a foot of water of a hump on a ½ oz Fishhead Spin and the others came from dropshot rigged Robo Worms in depths from 25 to 50 foot of water.
Sixth place went to David McAdams - Chuck Pollack with limit of 8.33. David – Chuck were the pre-tournament favorites to take this tourney since David lives very close and amassed a healthy pre-fishing advantage over the entire club. David & Chuck noted all their keepers came on GP T-Rig finesse worms in 10-ft depths.
Terminator’s Hall of Fame or Shame: this month, sad to say, it is the “Hall of Shame.” Shame on David McGrew - Bryan Phillips who left the tournament early due to boat problems and missed out on any chance of receiving the 100 dollar gift certificate to be used towards Terminator Fishing Lures, but instead they get to wear a dunce’s cap. Way to go guys, we have a special place of recognition designed just for you!
Weather Conditions: Sunday’s blast-off found cold damp air conditions with passing of major front that made chill index feel like 26 degrees. 34 degrees was the morning low and never to reach the 40 degree mark for a high. In the morning club anglers were greeted with some light snow flurries to help them remember just how cold it was. Lake surface temps varied, down lake and up the little river arm of surface temps 50 to 51 degrees. At the hot water discharge surface was 70 degrees and near discharge and up the Keowee River one could find 55 to 65 degree water. The Lake is as clear as drinking water.
Looking Ahead: Remember April 1st the DBC hosts the Annual Southeastern Bass Open to benefit the St Jude Children’s Reach Hospital. The field is filling fast, so don’t delay in reregistering to help worthy cause. Complete details on our website.
Next month March 19th the club travels to Hartwell. The Following month the club has its two-day at Lake Guntersville on the 8 and 9 of April. Club memberships are still available those interested, please contact us ASAP.
Special Thanks: Again to Terminator and Tom’s Foods for providing the much needed extra enjoyment to our regular festivities.
