Tournament Champs David McGrew & Bryan Phillips
DBC Assaults Logan Martin And Makes Club Favorite!”
Logan Martin has about everything anglers could ask for in a lake; humps, grass (prior to drawdown) points, bluffs, docks, schoolers, allowing anglers to work their favorite lures from top to bottom.
Most teams enjoyed a tremendous bite all weekend and several found no shortage of four-pounders to capture the top slots and the Logan Martin title. Overall the club had a spectacular catch. The lake is currently loaded with active shad and quality bass gorging for the coming winter. And with the lake being about 4 feet low, it had the fish concentrated on the shallow cover. Twenty-nine from DBC crossed state lines to catch and release 134 bass with an average weight of 1.86 pounds…and a massive 4.62 bass/boat avg. There were five fish that broke the four-pound mark which included some chunky Coosa River spots however the day’s BB was a 5.56 LM taken on a C-Rig.
Winners, Bryan Phillips and David McGrew were unable to pre-fish; drove over the morning of the tournament – had no preconceived ideas, however quickly put it together and amassed a great five fish limit pressing the scales to 15.12 lb. David caught the 2nd BB of the day, a 4.57 on a ¼ oz Sworming Hornet S/B, Bryan caught the 3rd BB of the day, a 4.37 on a jig. Quality was what we were after to beat this tough crowd, and we caught just enough noted David. They caught the remainder of their sack on DLN crankbaits. The win moves them just ahead of Mike & Joe in the race fro the points championship with one tourney to go.
Congratulations Bryan and David on great Tournament catch!
Capturing second place, Gary Henry with alternate Bill Joyce had a fine sack of fish that contained several quality bass and which weighed an admirable 14.06. Gary & Bill’s pattern was a hodge podge of baits working S/B, Buzzbait, and Jig covering lots of water.
Gene Hacker - James Eason took third with a nice sack of spots weighing 13.36. Gene – James worked jerk-baits over main lake wood cover and stump flats. Gene – James were able to adapt since the S/B bite was less than effective and when the spinner-bait bite is on these guys come to play and are tough to beat.
Roger Landress – Rick Morris finally had a fine day and their sack grabbed the fourth position with their five fish limit of 12.44. Rick noted, “We caught all our fish on main river ledges, drop-off’s off the points with the Sworming Hornet’s Fish-Head Spin. These guys shared Sat pre-fishing pix at the motel and clearly had a pattern that proved tough to beat. Their catch keeps them in the hunt for a fall classic berth.
Jeff Atcheson and alternate Barry Tweedy culled out the fifth position with a worthy catch of 11.74. Cementing their catch, Jeff nailed 5.56 LM, a beauty football sized chunk of a fish which captured BB of the tourney. Jeff noted they caught every fish on a C-Rig working a GP finesse worm. Jeff even shared the BB came on the first cast after pulling up on a point where another angler had just left.
Rick Cotten – Eric Holmes shined a tad today with a sixth place finish bringing a 5-fish sack to the scales weighing 11.61. Rick noted all their keepers came on a Bitsy bug jig with a 4” twin trailer and a Robo worm of some sort.
Fishing Tactics: Main lake points and humps produced the numbers, especially with the water being drawn down. Look for those that have big rocks and brush that the fish would use to ambush prey while Alabama Power is pulling water. The majority of fish were hanging on breaks. Banks which slowly taper to eight feet then drop suddenly. The quality fish had little desire for plastics; good bites came from reactions to small crankbaits and spinners.
Weather Conditions: Excellent, little wind, mostly cloudy, water temps were 58-61, air temp was 40 for morning low to a 65 deg daytime high. Just comfortable fall fishing conditions.
Looking Ahead: Duluth Bass Club has finalized the date and many of the key sponsors for the 2006 Southeastern Open Bass Tournament benefiting the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The date is Saturday, April 1st at Laurel Park, Lake Lanier. Mark your calendars and register early as we plan to have full house. Flyers are being distributed in the next few days. All proceeds raise tens of thousands of Dollars for the St. Jude organization and entries are tax-deductible donations.
