Steve Hicks / Josh Petty Tournament Champs
More Tournament Weigh-in Scenes
Sunday March 20, 33 teams of the Duluth Bass Club traveled to Lake Hartwell in hopes of some pre-spawn action. With the weather having been up and down the bite was a little sluggish, but anglers who practiced patients received their reward by finding active fish staging in the creeks and pockets as a full moon drew near.
Of 33 boats 28 weighed fish. The club saw 15 limits come across the scales and of those limits thirteen broke the 10 pound marks. In addition, there were 9 bass over the four pound mark. Not bad numbers, considering the size of the field,
Taking tournament honors, Steve Hicks and Josh Petty once again cruised home victorious by amassing quality sack of those staging fish. Steve and Josh's limit of 14.72 all appeared fat and loaded with eggs for dispersal. Their pattern of secondary points with black and blue pig and jigs is what excided their catch. Now they’re two out of three, for Sunday's win made their second victory this season and their ninth DBC win together. They are now the season point’s leaders with a four pound lead with three tournaments remaining.
Second place position went to Bo Waldrip and David McAdams with solid limit of 13.59. Bo and David honed in on a spinner bait and black trick worm pattern in depths of less than five feet to account for there catch
Buck Treadwell and Harvey Reagin netted the third place position. Their tale at the end of the day was simply black jigs in less than 3 feet of water, had to be flipping tight cover. Their catch moved them with in striking range of the point championship into second overall.
Forth place went of to Mister I need some gas money Royce Ingle and son Dale’s good catch of 12.57. Royce and Dale’s pattern was a little different from the rest, their catch all came on Zoom 6" Finesse Worms, sand colored.
Fifth place was Bill Booth and Bill Booth Sr, with 11.99. This father and son duo caught theirs on watermelon colored worms and creature baits
Finally sixth place went to Dusty Ingle (Grandson and Son to Royce and Dale) and Shawn Austin with 11.20. It was Shawn who captured the tournaments big bass weighing 5.31 on a red and white spinner bait. Congratulations Shawn on your first DBC Plaque.
Congratulations Steve and Josh on fine Lake Hartwell Victory!
Fishing Tactics: Fish could be caught on number of patterns as some fish are still in a later winter pattern and some are moving up to spawn. Reports of ledges and bluffs accounted for numbers, but is the shallow water patterns prevailed. Rattle traps, spinner baits and crank baits in the creeks and pockets near the spawning flats are your best bets.
Weather Conditions: Absolutely a superior day to be on the water. Morning low was 40 degrees and soon warmed as the sun appeared to 66 degrees. Sky were clear in the morning to become partly cloudy in afternoon. Water temps were 49 / 50 degrees warming though the day to 53 / 54 degrees. Hartwell was mostly clear with light stain in the back of the creeks and up the rivers.
Looking head: Saturday April 2nd, DBC and WNGC host the 3rd Annual St Jude Children's Research Hospital benefit tournament, over 100 percent payback.
