Josh Petty and Steve Hicks Claim Their 11th DBC Win
More Tournament Weigh-In Scenes
Same Difference
One year ago to the day, DBC fished Lake Sinclair under similar conditions and outcome was nearly the same; only the name’s on the leader board were the single difference. Comparing the two tournaments the top catches were nearly identical, and so were the winning patterns. The weather conditions were much the same, just hotter. Last year it was in the wake of Hurricane Ivan, this year in the wake of Katrina, and high pressure dominated both tournaments. It’s great to see club participation right in line with last year with the energy turmoil we all have endured the past few weeks.
This year’s tournament produced a tight finish between the top five teams. A single cull could have propelled any one of the four teams to the winners circle. A survey of the landscape would surely produce stories of the ones that got away.
Steve Hicks and Josh Petty laid claim to tournament honors by besting their rivals, Joe Yurina and Mike Haddad by a mere one ounce, a small enough spanking to surely keep the all-in-fun rivalry debate intact. Steve and Josh’s five fish limit flattened the scales to 9.19. The key to their success was Rattle Traps and black trick worms.
Taking second with the mere six one hundreds behind, Joe and Mike’s five fish limit pressed the scale to 9.13. Joe noted it would have been better to have taken a third than to fall to those guys by that small margin. However, to even things out a tad, Mike laid claim to some bragging rights by catching the tournament’s big bass weighing in at 3.80. Their technique of chrome blue Chug Bugs early and lead-heads laced with red-bug, and green pumpkin worms and a late day jig-n-pig bite fell just a tad short of the win, however it moved them into the fall season point’s leader.
Ken Sponsler and Jack Smith took home the third place prize. Ken and Jack’s limit of 8.96 came on Front Runner's, Pop-R's, and Texas rigged Caustic worms.
Forth place David McGrew and Bryan Phillips’ five weighed 8.55 taken on shad colored buzz-baits and spinner baits.
Fifth place went out to Mark Riehle and Steve Garland with their limit of 8.49, caught on Texas rigged green pumpkin worms and Fat-Free Shad crank baits. This is Mark and Steve’s first season with the club and they are certainly making their mark, finishing second last month at the West Point and moving from third to second place on the overall standings in the race to the fall classic.
Congratulations Steve and Josh, wow --- your eleventh DBC win, impressive!
Weather Conditions: High pressure dominated the day where the morning low was 69 degrees and day time high reached 93 degrees. Surface temps ranged from 85 to 89 degrees and the lake lightly stained. Afternoon’s hot temps were was some dampened by low humidity and a refreshing 5 to 10 mph WNW breeze.
Looking Ahead: Next month DBC fishes their fall two-day tournament on Clark Hill, Saturday and Sunday October 15th and 16th. The club will launch from Cherokee Access both days. There are several other tournaments taking place on that weekend including a BFL, so teams that have not made accommodations are encouraged to so now, as hotel space may be at premium. You can find complete Hotel and Motel list on our website.
