James Eason & James Eason Tournament Champs

More Weigh-in Scenes

Sunday, February 20th Duluth Bass Club fished their 2nd tourney of 05 by making their way down the Antebellum Trail to a club favorite.  And if the truth be known and rules allowed, DBC would almost certainly venture to Lake Sinclair more often. Seldom is Sinclair a disappointment.  Despite its small stature, this lake is a fish factory and historically club stats reaffirm it.  Over one third of the field made a day of it culling fish after fish all throughout the day; however for the rest it was not so easy.  Compared to past results this February’s Sinclair results were less than spectacular for a few, some had trouble scratching out small limits, others had trouble getting the good bites, and others you could not have convinced them there are any fish in the lake.

Sunday’s tournament produced 16 limits among a 34 boat field.  There were 108 bass presented for weigh-in, averaging 1.875 pounds each, for total creel of weight of 202.5 pounds of largemouth bass. The top 10 teams accounted for 60 percent of the total creel.  Chip Scroggs fishing solo as a guest was among the teams produced a sack that would have been good for fourth and weighed 11.95.  However, Chip noted that bragging rights were good enough for him.

After all was tallied, a couple of guys whom we all have to watch out for; Gene Hacker and James Eason took tournament and big fish honors with a total of 13.20.  Gene must have had premonition about the outcome; for when asked the night before, who was that with him, he answered, “my ace in the hole” that being James.  For James carried team this time catching the majority including the 4.80 big bass. James caught the LM on a black/blue 1/8 oz jig in 5-ft of water. Gene noted they caught fish on spinnerbait, rattletraps, jigs, and rattlin’ shadraps. This was their 9th club tournament win since teaming up in the spring of 2000 and moves them into the top-5 in the spring standings.

Second place was taken by Justin Still and William Wilson with their fine sack of solid keepers, pounced the scales to 12.77.  Justin was quick to share they caught all their fish on Bone colored rattle traps working sandy banks the entire day.  After two strong “T” finishes; Justin – William hold a solid second place in the spring season standings.

Taking home the third place position was Buck Treadwell and Harvey Reagin.  You could have laid their limit next to Justin & William’s and not been able to tell them apart as Buck and Harvey ’s catch weighed 12.57 lbs. a scant 3 oz less.   Buck shared; a 3/8 oz black jig did all the damage in making their day successful.  Their “T” finish moved them into fourth place in the spring standings.

The fourth place position went out the Scott Spoonamore and Mike Ratteree.  Their sack weighed 11.35 and was solidified with a nice 4.20 largemouth. Scott made note; all their fish came on a clown colored Normans shallow running crankbait. Their finish moved them into third place in the spring standings.

Fifth place went out to Roger Landress and Rick Morris, who noted they had field day culling through some 20 keeper bass to produce their sack of 11.20.  Rick and Roger’s pattern of skipping brown 3/16th jigs with a chartreuse trailer under docks was the ticket to their success.

Sixth place David McAdams and Bo Waldrip worked a similar pattern as fifth place to produce a limit of 10.88. David noted that he had to skip his jigs all the way under the docks and drag it very slowly.  And if he hit any part of the dock with the jig or hopped it off the bottom they would not take it, only certain presentations would produce.   Their validated claims are; they culled through 25 bass during the day and only caught two non-keepers.

Congratulations Gene and James on fine Sinclair win and your ninth club win!

Weather Conditions:  Sunday’s weather forecast had a big question mark hanging over it the week prior, but it turned out to superior fishing day.  It was mostly cloudy during the day with brief periods of sprinkles in the morning. On very brief occasions the sun did poke thought the clouds.  Morning lows were a comfortable 50 degrees and the daytime high reached 65 with wind from the south southeast never being a factor.  The lake was heavy stained to muddy with temps ranging from 47 to 50 degrees away from the discharge.  Near the discharger temps were 62 degree and near the intake 57.

Sponsors: Again, many thanks to Tom’s Foods for supplying all the morning snacks and goodies for everyone.  A Great way to start everyone’s day.
